In this issue, Mr. Hiroto Takeuchi, a third-year graduate student in our laboratory, reports on his internship activities.

<Symbols of Uppsala: Uppsala Cathedral, A research facility of Uppsala University where I stayed, and a common space called Navet>
I stayed at Uppsala University, Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology (UUIGP) in Sweden from October 5 to 28 to experience industry-academia collaborative research at a research institution.
This internship was achieved thanks to the support of Dr. Ryoyo Ikebuchi, a graduate of our laboratory who is currently a postdoctoral researcher at UUIGP. During the internship, I stayed at two laboratories (PI: Dr. Ulf Landegren and Dr. Masood Kamali-Moghaddam) to which Dr. Ikebuchi belongs.
During my stay, I learned about the highly versatile and sensitive protein detection methods (PLA-RCA, sp PLA, and PEA) developed in the laboratories and tried to apply them to my own research. Since all of the methods I experienced are highly versatile and can detect proteins with higher sensitivity than the existing methods in our laboratory, I would like to challenge issues that I had previously given up due to sensitivity problems and utilize my knowledge and experience in various fields by actively sharing them.
Furthermore, through this internship, I experienced the working style in Sweden. In Sweden, people value their time with their families, and most of the members started coming to the office around 9:00 a.m. and went home by 6:00 p.m. In addition, there was an understanding of child-rearing and an attitude of balancing research and private life to conduct research efficiently.
On the first floor of the university facility, several start-up companies started by graduates of Ulf group based on patents they had obtained were in operation. Some of the lab members are working toward starting their own companies, and I was impressed by the business-oriented discussions that took place at the lab meetings. The university also had a department specializing in patents and was ready to support the filing of patents for start-ups. I felt that good ideas were born in such an environment. I will try to create an environment where I can have open discussions in my own research activities.
