Internship at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany

As a student of the World-leading Innovative and Smart Education (WISE) program, which encourages active engagement in One Health initiatives, I had the opportunity to undertake an internship at the laboratory of Professor Benedikt Kaufer—one of the foremost experts in Marek’s disease virus research—at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, from September 14th to October 20th. My primary focus was on cloning the herpesvirus of turkey (HVT), which is used as a vaccine strain for Marek’s disease.

During my time in Berlin, I learned the latest cloning techniques for herpesviruses and attended lectures and participated in social events with fellow students, allowing me to forge many valuable connections. It was a truly enriching experience, and I am eager to visit Berlin again!

Moving forward, I plan to use the cloned HVT in Japan to create the development of more effective vaccines!
