Looking back on the history of our Brazil-Japan joint research

(reported by Dr. Renato Martins da Silva)

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and an associate member of the Galzu Institute in Brazil. In this issue, I report a bit of my experience collaborating with Professors Ohashi and Konnai over the past 11 years.

In 2012, I had the opportunity to undertake a six-month research stay at the Infectious Diseases Laboratory in Japan as part of my doctoral studies. Initially hesitant about visiting Japan for the first time and not knowing the Japanese research group, I was pleasantly surprised by how amazing everything turned out to be. The research group at the Infectious Diseases Lab welcomed me warmly with great cordiality and respect. They provided all the facilities for my study, which resulted in two published articles collaborating with them as part of my doctoral thesis. I also fell in love with Japanese culture, learning about its history and language, and experiencing various foods and festivals in Sapporo. It truly was an incredible experience that I cherish in my heart.

Because of my special connection to Japan, I decided to return for my postdoctoral research in the same research group of Professors Ohashi and Konnai. In 2018, I spent a fruitful year there, further expanding our publications. During that time, I made the most of Japan by experiencing all four seasons. Now, in 2023, I returned to Japan for a third time to conduct another postdoctoral research stint in this exceptional research group led by Konnai-sensei. I hope this work will lead to many more publications and open up promising future prospects of collaborations. Ultimately, I can confidently say that there is no Brazilian who has appreciated Japan and its culture as much as I have.
