Global Communication Report #9 - Dr. Naftaly at ILRI

Tick is a blood-sucking ectoparasite that causes numbers of problems for livestock and public health. We have been collaborating with researchers in Japan and abroad to develop anti-tick vaccines for the control of tick-borne deseases in livestock.

Dr. Naftaly Wang'ombe Githaka belonged to our laboratory during his PhD program, worked on the research for tick control in Africa and Japan, and recieved the PhD degree in 2013. Dr. Naftaly is currently a Senior Scientist and Unit Manager at the Tick Unit of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya.

ILRI is one of the international research institutes established by the Council for Global Agricultural Research (CGIAR) to improve sustainable productivity in livestock production, primarily in developing countries.

In Africa, various tick-borne infectious diseases, including East Coast Fever (a tick-borne bovine Theileriosis), are still prevalent and significantly affect livestock production. Dr. Naftaly has been working on control methods for tick-borne infectious diseases of livestock, such as East Coast Fever.
